Project Community enables undergraduate students to engage in community service learning and reflection for 2-4 course credits in the fall or winter semester.

Program areas include: education • gender and sexuality • public health • criminal justice

Project Community has a rich history of combining meaningful service with academic learning. Current and prospective site partners are invited to learn more about partnership and contact us.

Interested students can serve as participants in Soc 389 or peer facilitators in Soc 325 or 395. Project Community is graded on a credit/no credit basis and can be repeated.

Soc 389 students:

  • serve approximately 4 hours per week
  • engage in a weekly 90 minute seminar
  • write about their experience

Be a Peer Facilitator

Peer Facilitators are undergraduate student leaders within the Project Community program. After being selected and trained, they take on a number of leadership responsibilities that provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Responsibilities

Facilitate a weekly seminar: Peer Facilitators facilitate a weekly, 90-minute seminar of undergraduate students serving at the same community site. These are vivid dialogues reflecting on sociological concepts, incorporating the course readings and community service experience.

Transportation Information

If you are currently enrolled in Sociology 389 or are the peer facilitator for a section of the course, you may apply to use a Project Community vehicle to travel directly to and from the designated community service site for your section. Sociology 389 Course Information

Sociology 389: Practicum in Sociology (Experiential) is offered in Fall and Winter terms on a mandatory Credit/ No Credit basis. There are sections available for 2, 3, and 4 credit hours. However, please note that each section has a determined number of credits, which cannot be modified by the student. The course may be repeated for credit for a maximum of 8 credits. Up to 4 credits of SOC 389 may be included in a concentration plan in Sociology.
